How Much Does a Remap Cost?
The cost of your ECU remap will vary depending on your vehicle type and what you want to gain from the remap. Many people shop around for a remap based on price alone, and will usually end up getting a poor quality product as a result. We find that our product attracts the customers that are looking for a high quality tuning solution rather than just the cheapest possible, and ECU remapping is certainly a product that falls under the category of 'you get what you pay for'.At first glance most companies seem to offer a very similar remapping service, with the immediate and most obvious difference being the price, you will see a wide variety of prices advertised for what seems to be the same product and service.
It would seem that opting for a 'good price' would be the best idea and if all things were equal then maybe this would be the best way to decide who to choose to remap your vehicle. However all things are not equal and all remaps are not the same. In a marketplace where the investment costs of providing a high quality remap are huge (investing in a full testing facility, premises, rolling road 'dyno', expensive tuning and testing equipment etc...) then the only way to cut costs is to cut corners. But this doesnty mean that the best is also the most expensive!
Make your choice based on what you are being offered, not on cost alone. Genuine companies will be there for you if you have a problem later on, even if only for advice. If the price you have been quoted sounds too good to be true, then it probably is.
Check out our ECU remapping page for a comprehensive list of prices.

Why Remap my Vehicle?
As with most modern technology, the cars of today are controlled by internal computer systems referred to as 'Electronic Control Units' or 'ECU'. The program stored within this ECU is known as a 'map' hence the term 're-mapping'. When manufacturers design a vehicle and its engine, they generally have a ‘1 size fits all’ approach to the way the ECU map is programmed. Many variables need to be taken into consideration.
The type of fuel you put in your tank for example, has a big effect on the way the engine runs. It would not be commercially viable for manufacturers to create a separate ECU map for every region, so instead they design the vehicle to be able to run on the lowest grade fuel. Most of Europe and the UK benefit from very high quality fuel so we can optimise the vehicle's ECU map to make the most of this fact.
Manufacturers also need to sell their cars to a range of different drivers. The Mk5 VW Golf for example, leaves the factory with a 2 litre turbo diesel engine producing 140bhp. This car could appeal to both a young person wanting a fast and fun hatchback or an older person looking for an easy to drive, comfortable car. How do they get around this issue? They make a car that’s fast enough for the younger person, but without the sharpness and instant throttle response that the older person may find hard to live with.
PDTuning can accurately, safely and reliably re-map your vehicles ECU to make the engine perform exactly as you want it to (within safety tolerances of course).

What Happens During an ECU Remap?
Firstly we will discuss what the customer wants to gain from having their vehicle re-mapped and give honest, professional advice and suggestions. Once we have done this we will subject the car to a full inspection and diagnostic test of the vehicles electrical systems to ensure that everything is in good working order, any faults found will be dealt with at this stage before any tuning is carried out.
The next stage of a re-map is to read the information held by the ECU (via the vehicles diagnostic port) and make an identical copy. We then install the vehicle onto our rolling road to test its current power and torque outputs as well as monitoring fuelling and turbo boost.
We then use our wealth of knowledge and experience to re-calibrate various parameters within your original map. This map is then re-loaded and we repeat the rolling road test. We will usually be very close to the desired results at this stage, but some fine tuning is usually required. The job is not complete until we are 100% satisfied with the way that the car is performing on the rolling road.
The vehicle is then road tested and once again we carry out a full diagnostic test to ensure that the tuning has not upset any of the vehicles electronic systems. Your original map is then uploaded to our secure database in case you ever wish for it to be re-loaded to your ECU in the future.
We are so confident in our tuning that every re-map comes with a 7 day test period for you to test your car, if you are not 100% delighted we will be happy to re-tune or offer a full refund!

Why choose PD Tuning to remap my vehicle?
At PDTuning, we pride ourselves on our knowledge, experience and reputation. We are at the forefront of engine tuning and diagnostics and strongly believe that the methods and equipment we use are the best available. We have invested hundreds of thousands of pounds over the years to keep up with the latest technology and build our own rolling road tuning centre with the very best equipment available. We write our own software, write our own re-maps and extensively test and tune every vehicle that comes through our doors as if it were our own. All of our technicians are fully qualified and our premises is fully insured.
In recent years we have noticed that many individuals have started up 'ECU re-mapping' businesses as a quick and easy way to make a quick profit. They offer very cheap prices and make some very bold claims. These types of 'tuners' usually have websites with only a mobile phone number as a form of contact and will carry out the service on a mobile basis. They will read the original map from your car's ECU and email it to someone to re-tune. This will then be sent back to them and rewritten to the vehicles ECU.
The person that is writing the tuned map has not tested the vehicles engine or even seen the vehicle, all they have done is had a 'good guess' at what the file should contain and hoped for the best. Have they measured anything? Tested anything? Looked at any real-time data? In fact, most of these file writing companies are not even based in the UK. You wouldn't pay someone to tune a piano by listening to it down the phone and using a middle man to adjust the strings would you?

Will Remapping Affect my Warranty, Insurance or MOT?
There is no reason that having your vehicle re-mapped will affect your warranty, we are not adding or taking anything from the vehicle, we are simply adjusting the existing settings within the manufacturer’s tolerances. It is highly unlikely that a manufacturer will even be able to find that the procedure has been carried out; however we are happy to return your car to standard before any visit to the main dealer if you require us to.
Should you tell your insurance company? This is up to you. We have to advise that you inform your insurance companies that the remap has been carried out but it is extremely difficult to detect. Ultimately it is your responsibility.
As for the annual MOT test, your car should have no problem in passing the unless there is something wrong with the vehicle at the time. If you do have a problem we will do our upmost to help. Every vehicle we tune is monitored for smoke emissions. Particularly in the 2003 onwards vehicles which have to adhere to more stringent limits

The Dos & Don’ts of Remapping
How do you know if you are getting a quality product and service? below we have detailed some of the more obvious things to look out for and hopefully this will give you a good indication of what to look out for when shopping around for a quality remap. Just pick up a copy of your local Autotrader and take a look at the number of small ads that claim to be the best at the cheapest price and ask yourself the following:
• Do they list a mobile phone number only?
• Do they have a registered UK business address?
• Are they insured?
• Do they claim to offer a full and comprehensive service working from the back of a van?
With no landline telephone number and no business address it’s unlikely that you are dealing with a professional company, usually working from the back of a van with 'cloned' tuning tools and very little experience.
When dealing with extremely high-tec engine management equipment it is inevitable that things go wrong from time to time. The question you must ask is this, can a man in a van fix it there and then, and if not are they insured to cover the cost of a replacement engine management system? More importantly, can I find them if I have a problem in the future? A mobile 'tuner' may well be happy to travel miles to make some money, but will they be as eager to come back if their poor quality work has caused you a problem?
